Astrals’ coming single ‘Bad Seed’ is an ear grabbing song featuring an eclectic mix of genres that include garage rock, dream pop and surf rock, wrapped up in a glitzy, clean and accessible pop finish. Astrals is a solo project by NSW based artist Claire Simpson. Astrals’ overall sound takes on the sonic form of a child’s drawing on a refrigerator door; starry eyed, smeared with glitter and grungey around the edges. While opportunities to play live shows have lessened during the COVID 19 pandemic, ‘Bad Seed’ will be the first of many upcoming releases by Simpson as she has used her time during isolation to write and record an array of songs. With a duration lasting under 3 minutes, ‘Bad Seed’ is a head bopper that quickly draws the listener in with its easy pop melody while at the same time using darker lyrics to craftily belie and layer its pop shimmer. “I wanted to write a duplicitous pop song. A song that has a contradictory doubleness flowing through it, in the form of a hooky clean melody, that’sthrown off kilter by the suggestion of something sinister going on in the lyrics”describes Simpson. “Bad Seed” is out now!
